Empúries comes from the Latin Emporiæ, itself derived from the Greek Ἐμπόριον / Emporion, meaning "market", "warehouse".
Founded around 580 BC by Phocaean colonists, as a trading post - emporion - the city was then occupied by the Romans, and almost abandoned in the early Middle Ages, after giving its name to the county of Empúries.

Figueres:
Figueres or Figueras (officially Figueres in Catalan, Figueras in Castilian, or formerly Figuières in French) is a city in northern Catalonia in Spain. It is the capital of the county of Alt Empordà in the province of Girona. The city has 47,200 inhabitants in 2020 and is known to house the Salvador Dalí Museum and the largest fortress in Europe, the Castle of Sant Ferran.
It is located 24 km south of the Perthus pass, on the rail and road axis that connects Barcelona to France. Its economy is based on tourism and agriculture, and takes advantage of its geographical location near the Costa Brava, the Franco-Spanish border as well as Girona and Barcelona.
Empuriabrava:
official name in Catalan (Ampuriabrava in Castilian) located about 40 km from the border between France and Spain, is one of the largest residential marina in the world with more than 30 km of canals. It is located on the Costa Brava in the bay of Roses (in Castilian, Rosas), 15 km from Figueras (in Castilian and Figueres, official name in Catalan), 60 km from Girona-Costa Brava airport, and 120 km from Barcelona), in the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries.
Roses or Rosas:
officially Roses, pronounced in Catalan: [ˈrɔ.zəs] Listen) is a municipality in the comarca of Alt Empordà, province of Girona, in Catalonia (Spain). The town is in the center of the bay to which it gives the name - Bay of Roses - and in the far north of the Gulf of Roses. It is a tourist center with many urbanizations, hotels and facilities, two ports (fishing and sport). It is located in the northern zone whose reliefs rise on the Pyrenean foothills. The climate is marked by the tramontana and the proximity of the sea. The seafront is bordered by a large sandy beach - between the new port and le grau - and, further east, numerous creeks, the best known of which are Canyelles Petites, Almadrava (or Canyelles Grosses), Murtra, Rustella, Montjoi, Pelosa, and Jóncols. Some geographical accidents are notable, such as the Falconera point (overlooked by a former military installation where nature has reclaimed its rights) and the imposing Cape Norfeu which is part of the reserve of the Cap de Creus natural park. offers the main source of income for Roses, the primary sector is also very present with agriculture (olive trees and vines) and especially fishing, the port of Roses being the most important of all the north coast of Catalonia.
